Phoenix Tattoo of the Mythical Mystical Sacred Firebird
A
Phoenix Tattoo
displays a picture of the mythical sacred firebird called the phoenix. The phoenix bird is a sign
of being immortal or invincible, and a symbol of divinity and fire.
Phoenix tattoos
can mean very much the same thing to the wearer, with the phoenix symbolizing immortality,
resurrection, and life after death.
The phoenix is a gold and red male bird. When getting ready to die, the phoenix builds a nest of
cinnamon twigs, ignites it and goes in flames along with it. From the ashes of this fire, a young
phoenix will rise. The ashes are embalmed by the young phoenix in an egg with myrrh, and it's left
in Heliopolis. For this reason, a tattoo featuring a phoenix symbolizes to some the embarking on
a new journey or starting over and some tattoos even portray the phoenix' rise from the ashes.
Different cultures saw the phoenix in different ways. The Native Americans told the myth of the
phoenix being calling it a Thunderbird. The Egyptians saw it as a bennu, similar to a gray heron.
The Chinese
saw the phoenix as symbolizing yin and yang, and the Greeks – well the Greeks simply called it the
phoenix.
In modern literature, the phoenix first appeared in a 1940 short story, "The Phoenix," and in
another short story, 1941's "A Worn Path." In modern day, the phoenix makes an appearance in JK
Rowlings'
Harry Potter
series of books and movies as Dumbledore's pet – A phoenix named Fawke. In Rowlings' stories, the
phoenix can carry great weight. Its tears also have healing powers, and the phoenix' song is said
to strike fear in hearts of those who hear it. The wizards' wands all have a magical element; one
of those magical elements is a phoenix' feather. As a matter of fact the Harry Potter series has
probably made the tattoos of the phoenix even more popular, especially among the younger tattoo
fans.
A tattoo depicting a phoenix can carry any of these meanings. The phoenix can be mystical or
modern, and can take on the meanings that the phoenix holds in any number of different societies.
But a phoenix on a tattoo will always be seen as starting over and a rebirth.
